How to Install Windows Media Player 11 Plugin for Firefox

Save

Because the Firefox browser is not immediately compatible with all things Microsoft on the Internet, you may need to download a few plugins to get the most out of your browser. One of the most important plugins for Firefox is the Windows Media Player 11 plugin, which will allow you to watch streaming videos on the Internet in the Windows Media format.

  • Go to the Microsoft Open Source Community website and find the direct link to the page for the Windows Media Player 11 for the Firefox plugin. Once you find the page, scroll down to the download link and click on it (see Resources below).

  • Save the file to the desktop when the dialog box opens. Once it is saved to the desktop, double-click on the file to run it.

  • Click through the various dialog boxes until the plugin is completely installed. Then restart your computer.

  • Delete the file you have saved to your desktop. Because the plugin is already installed, there is no reason to keep this.

  • Set your preferences by typing "About:plugins" (without the quotes) into your Firefox address bar. From here you can see which file types the plugin will open automatically and which ones can be set manually.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Windows Media Player 11 plugin is necessary for .wmv, .wvx, and .wma files.
