How to Become a Famous Artist
Art is one of the most potent and timeless ways for people to feed their souls. Whether one works in oil on canvas or with clay on a pottery wheel, the artist has the chance to enrich lives. But this can only happen for you if people see your work. When you become a famous artist, you have an audience for your work. You also become a brand, inserting yourself into the culture, allowing yourself to have further opportunities that allow you to popularize your art. And yes, you can often make more money that way, too.

1
Become a good artist. Even if you are famous, your art will mean much less if it’s no good. Take as many art classes as you can. Work with a variety of media. Just as importantly, go and see as much great art as you can. Learn from the masters, hacks and everyone in between.

2
Make connections. In any pursuit, it’s important to cultivate relationships to help you get what you want in the end. It’s not a good idea to use people, but you should make friends. Many times, opportunities come because a friend of a friend happens to know of someone who needs art. Your art.

3
Become a leading light in your local art scene. If you don’t have a lot of artists and galleries in your area, you may even have to move to a city that will afford you more opportunities. Be willing to display your work anywhere you can. Be choosier when you’re a famous artist, but be accessible when you’re just starting out.

4
Be notorious. Unfortunately, talent and hard work aren’t the only way to become a famous artist. Many artists have built a mystique around themselves by doing things that might not be related to their art. Although Vincent Van Gogh certainly produced timeless work, another part of the reason you’ve probably heard about him is the fact that he cut off his own ear. He went overboard, but you shouldn’t.

5
Innovate with your art. If you’re doing the same exact thing as lots of other people, it’s really hard to stand out from the crowd. What is your “hook”? When people think of you, they should have an image in mind. Be sure that there’s something unique about your art.
