How to Speak With Eloquence

Do you want to speak with more eloquence when communicating with colleagues or friends? For most people, making a speech can be nerve-wracking. Speaking in public can put you on the spot, even if it's only in front of a small audience, such as at a work meeting, and make even the most elegant speaker choke. This is why speaking with eloquence, even in front of an auditorium full of high-school students--notoriously the worst--is such an important endeavor.

Instructions

    • 1

Improve your vocabulary. Read books, browse the dictionary, or review vocabulary exercises designed for standardized testing such as the SATs and GRES and LSATS to gain better fluency with the English language. Even if you think you have a strong vocabulary, most people can benefit from some improvement. It is more important to use a word in its proper context than to use long, impressive words in the wrong context. A misuse of "verisimilitude" will not impress anyone.

    • 2

Use notes and prepare what you are going to say in advance. Write out key points or prepare an outline of your speech. Follow with practice. Solicit feedback and then practice some more.

    • 3

Relax. The biggest setback in speaking with eloquence is nervousness. Nervousness can increase your heart rate and lead to stuttering and the slurring of words. Calm yourself beforehand and stay away from coffee if you are prone to nervous energy.

    • 4

Make eye contact during your speech. Acknowledge your audience and don't get nervous if you notice someone looking at you attentively--it just means you're doing a good job.

    • 5

Speak appropriately for your audience. Avoid using words that are so big, impressive, and hard to pronounce that your audience has no clue what you're saying. Eloquent speaking is not about using big words; it's about using the perfect word to get your meaning across.

    • 6

Listen. Answer any questions people ask you during or after the speech.
