How to Create a Restore Disc for a Sony VAIO Laptop Computer

The availability of a computer restore disc is crucial to any owner of a laptop or desktop. If your hard drive crashes, if you lose information due to a virus or your computer's drivers get corrupted, the restore disc may be your only saving grace. But not every company provides you with these necessary items upon the purchase of a new computer. The Sony VAIO laptop does not come packed with a set of restore discs for emergency use. Therefore, the new owner must create the restore discs. Sony provides a factory installed program to help get this job done.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 DVD+R discs or 8 CD+R discs
  • Purchase at least two DVD+R discs for the Sony VAIO restore disc creation process. Restore discs require a large amount of space to hold the information, so ordinary CDs aren't big enough. The Sony VAIO restore disc process can also be done with eight regular CD+R discs.

  • Turn on your Sony VAIO laptop computer and allow the system to completely start up. If the laptop is already turned on, exit out of any open programs and close all open windows. Programs running in the background can interfere with the creation of your recovery discs.

  • Click the Windows "Start" button, select "All Programs," choose the "VAIO Recovery Center" folder and click "VAIO Recovery Center."

  • Click the “Create Recovery Discs” option and choose "Next."

  • Click "Next."

  • Choose which disc option you are using and click "Next."

  • Place the first DVD+R disc into your disc drive and click the "Start" button inside the “Create Recovery Discs” information box. This will begin the process of creating the restore discs.

  • Follow the prompts and swap DVD+R discs when prompted. The Sony VAIO recovery disc program will walk you through the process and prompt you when you need to insert a second disc. When the second disc is created, you will be prompted once more to remove the second disc. At that time the process is complete and you have successfully created restore discs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store the restore discs in a location that is easily accessible. The discs should be placed in a room temperature environment, free from dust, dirt or items that may scratch them.
  • Storing the restore discs inside plastic jewel cases will ensure that they do not become damaged.
  • If your restore discs become lost or damaged, repeat the process immediately. The restore discs are vital in cases of a hard drive crash or loss of drivers, so make sure they are always available to you.
