How to Play the Card Game Last One
Last One is a simple card game where players play cards in turn until someone is lucky enough to go out—no cards remaining in his hand. Players then earn a penalty point for each card they’re left holding. Of course, it wouldn’t be a good game if there weren’t a few special cards in the deck which alter the way you can play. Typically, this is a game for between 2 and 4 players, but more can be added with the addition of another deck of cards.

Deal out the cards so that each player has a total of 8 cards in his hand. The remaining cards are placed at the center of the table with the top card flipped over and placed next to it. These act as the draw pile and discard pile, respectively.

Lay a card, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Whatever card is currently face up on the discard pile dictates what card can be played from your hand. It must be of either the same suit or rank to be considered a valid play.

Learn about the special cards in the deck:Playing a 2 forces the player to your left to take 2 cards from the draw pile and forfeit their turn.Playing a 3 means you may stack a card. To stack is to play any card from your hand atop the 3 you just played, ridding your hand of 2 cards in a single turn.Playing an 8 allows you to change the suit (and can be played on any card). Playing a jack skips the turn of the player to your left.Playing an ace changes the direction of play—shifting left to right and right to left.Playing a joker acts as the same suit and rank of the previous card.

Continue to play around the table with each player following the rules as already described.

Announce that you have the “Last One” when you are down to a single card in your hand.

Earn a single penalty point for each card remaining in your hand when someone goes out (rids her hand of cards).

Win the game of Last One by having the least amount of penalty points after a set number of rounds.
