How to Enter a World Series of Poker Event

The World Series of Poker in Las Vegas is the biggest event on the poker calendar each year. Featuring between 50 and 60 bracelet events with buy-ins ranging from $1,000 to $50,000, there are millions of dollars to be won at the Rio in Las Vegas. Below are some steps you will need to take if you want to play on poker's grandest stage.

  • Get a Harrah's players club card and bring your picture ID. You can't register for an event without either. You can get the players club card at any Harrah's property in the country and there is also a booth set up near the WSOP tournament area where you can get one.

  • Bring cash. You must have either greenbacks or a WSOP buy-in chip to enter an event. You can't get the buy-in chips without cash. If you are worried about carrying a lot of money across the country to Las Vegas, try wiring the money to the Rio or use traveler's checks.

  • Find the line for tournament registration. Harrah's often moves the registration area from year to year as it finds better ways of organizing traffic at the WSOP, but it always keeps registration near the Amazon ballroom that serves as the main WSOP tournament area.

  • Tell the teller which tournament you would like to play and give her the right amount of cash, your players club card and your ID. She will verify your information and give you a seat card. This will show you in which table and seat you will play in the tournament (all of the tables have numbers hanging beneath the lights above them, making them easy to find).

  • Take your seat after finding your table. Show your seat card and ID to the dealer who will verify you are in the right place.

Tips & Warnings

  • People often try to sell buy-in chips to people in line to enter a tournament. This is a common practice around the WSOP because players often find themselves with more buy-in chips than they need after winning a satellite in which these chips are awarded. If someone asks you to buy a chip, try to get a slight discount. Offer $480 or $490 for a $500 chip. It could save you a few bucks on your buy-in.
