Conduct a Training Session Effectively

The article below provides tips and tricks for conducting training sessions successfully; in the workplace and in the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the training material organized! It can be difficult for attendants to follow along in the training session if the information bounces back and forth. Provide an outline to the students for them to follow along and take notes.

    • 2

Keep the training session upbeat and interesting by including stories, jokes, and examples. If you simply spurt facts at the attendants, they may become bored or uninterested.

    • 3

Encourage participation! It can be rather boring for a trainee to do nothing more than sit and listen to an instructor or trainer. Instead, use various methods to keep your attendants more involved by asking questions or by holding a number of open discussion segments.

    • 4

Use visual aids throughout your training session! By adding visuals to your lecture, you can help keep attendants more focused on the topic, help them better understand the key points if they are having a difficult time following the lecture, and increase the chances that they will retain the information.

    • 5

Depending on how long your training session is, consider including a couple of breaks to give students a chance to stretch their legs. Alternatively, you can work in a couple of off topic exercises designed to give attendants a refresher; such as breathing exercises.

    • 6

Design a couple of impromptu scripts for the students to act out. Create a situation related to your session and ask attendants to play various roles in front of the class. This can be a great way to not only keep students involved, but to also increase the chance that the students will retain what they have learned.

    • 7

Incorporate some games in your training session! Games can be a great way to keep students entertained and involved. There are a variety of games you can use; so exercise that creative spark to increase interest! For example, split the attendants up into groups and give out a prize to the group who correctly answers a series of questions related to the training session.

Tips & Warnings

  • Design your training environment in a way that can increase active participation; such as creating groups or by placing tables in a circle so that attendants can face each other communicate better.
