Adding RAM (system memory) to your PC or Mac computer is one of the easiest, least expensive and most effective ways to speed up your computer's performance. Here's how to find the right RAM to upgrade your system.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • desktop computer,
  • laptop, or
  • Mac
  1. Step 1

    .

Head to crucial.com, where you'll find two very useful tools: a System Scanner, and the Memory Advisor tools.

  2. Step 2

    .

Use either or both of these to peek into the insides of your computer, identify your existing RAM components, and most importantly -- identify the proper RAM chips to use for upgrades to your system's memory that can greatly improve system performance.

The crucial.com scans and tools will work with desktop or laptop PCs, or Apple's Mac line of computers.

  3. Step 3

    .

Adding or replacing RAM chips is not difficult, and can be done with just a screwdriver on most modern desktop or laptop computers.

  4. Step 4

    .

Purchase the appropriate RAM chips and install them in your computer. You can purchase them from crucial.com, or from any of the many other merchants that sell computer memory. See Resources, directly below, for more information and options.

Tips & Warnings
