Find out what your skin type is. There are four basic categories: Oily, dry, combination or normal. Dry skin is usually prone to cracking and peeling. Oily skin is shiny, greasy and more acne-prone, while combination skin is just that: A combination of both. It will have dry spots and some oily spots, usually on your cheeks or forehead. Normal skin is not too dry and not too oily.

Pick a facial cleanser. Find out which face wash works for your skin type. You can choose from gels, creams or even foams. There are some cleaners targeted toward eliminating acne, dryness and even aging. Find what works for you and stick with it.

Decide if you need a toner or an astringent. Toners are best for dry or sensitive skin, keeping it hydrated and nourished. Toners don't contain drying alcohols, which would irritate those skin types. Astringents are best for oily or combination skin. They contain alcohols to help dry up the oil. Astringents also help lower the skin's pH level, normalizing it after cleansing.

Always moisturize! It doesn't matter if you use an astringent or a toner; your skin needs to be moisturized during the day. Some moisturizers are heavy creams and others are light lotions. Whichever you choose, make sure it contains some form of SPF protection of at least a 15 rating. Wearing a moisturizer with an active sunscreen can prevent premature aging, and of course protects your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.

Tips & Warnings
Exfoliate only a few times a week. Exfoliating with a scrub is a great way to get rid off dead skin cells that clog your pores. Yet it's not recommended you do this daily, especially if you have dry skin. This can create irritation, and redness from excessive scrubbing. You can exfoliate two or three times a week after washing your face. Always remember to be gentle and not abrasive while applying.
