How to Play the Card Game Remi

The game of Remi is a variation on Rummy. This game has a number of added restrictions, making the game a little more challenging. It's still easily played. Each player is dealt a set number of cards from which to make runs and ranks. Certain cards cannot be played in every run, and players may not play off each other’s cards. See, it is a bit more challenging. From here, it’s pretty much business as usual for this sort of card game.

Instructions

    • 1

Deal out the deck until all players have a total of seven cards in their hands. The remaining cards are placed towards the center of the table and will act as the draw pile for the rest of the hand. The top card of the draw pile is not flipped over. The first player will only be able to draw a card from the draw pile.

    • 2

Draw a card, starting with the person to the left of the dealer. Draw from either the draw pile or the discard pile.

    • 3

Incorporate the card into your hand. You are looking to create runs and ranks. A run is a sequence of cards in descending order, but they must be either royal or numeric, not both. A rank is a set of three to four cards of the same rank.

    • 4

Put down any runs or ranks that you are able to create in your hand. Though other players are not allowed to play off them, these cards are laid out face up in front of you.

    • 5

Discard a card from your hand, placing it at the top of the pile. This indicates that your turn is complete. Play will now move to the next player.

    • 6

Continue to play as described until one player is out of cards. This will call the end of the round.

    • 7

Tabulate your score by subtracting the points still left in your hand from those points earned in your runs and ranks. Aces are worth 15. Royal cards are worth 10. Numeric cards are worth 5.

    • 8

Win the game of Remi by having the highest score after 12 rounds of play.

Tips & Warnings

  • To determine the order of play, deal out the deck face up until one player is dealt a jack. This player takes the first deal. Play moves to his left in a clockwise direction around the table.

  • Runs must either be of the royal variety or numeric variety.

  • Aces cannot be played on any run. They are only able to be used in ranks.
