Things You'll Need:
- Cardboard
- Hot glue gun
- Small roll fiberfill batting
- Gold or red cloth (velvet or brocade)
- Duct tape
- Small straight pins
- Large plastic craft jewels (or glitter fabric paint)
- 2 yards red velvet
- Faux fur trim, any color
- Costume crown
-
Step 1
Cut a piece of cardboard to fit against the seat back of the wheelchair. Every wheelchair is different, so cut the cardboard just wide enough to fit from the seat up the back. Cut the top of the cardboard to resemble a throne, with a slight curved top or more detailed spokes. The top of the throne can be as tall as your child wants as long as it fits in the vehicle and through standard doors.
-
Step 2
Use the hot glue gun to cover the front of the cardboard throne with a layer of fiberfill batting. Trim the excess batting an inch in from all the edges. Then place a layer of velvet or brocade fabric over the filling. Secure it with hot glue around the edges. Fold the excess fabric around and secure it to the back of the cardboard. Place a few rolled pieces of duct tape on the back of the cardboard and press it to the seat back. (If the seat back has a neck brace or neckrest, cut a hole to let it fit through the throne.)
-
Step 3
Cut a small rectangle of cardboard 5 inches wide and the length of each armrest. Hot glue a small section of fiberfill batting to the cardboard and trim the edges. Use duct tape to secure each piece to the top of an armrest. Drape extra pieces of cloth over each armrest so it hangs down on both sides and the front. Secure at the edges with small straight pins.
-
Step 4
Hot glue rows of craft jewels to the throne and armrests. Or use glitter fabric paint to paint diamond, square and circle shapes on the throne. Let the throne and armrests dry completely.
-
Step 5
Make the royal cape. Spread out 2 yards of red velvet with the velvet side up. Along one long side, place the faux fur trim next to the edge. Trim it to fit the edge. Hot glue the faux fur trim to the velvet. Allow the cape to dry.
-
Step 6
Place your child in the wheelchair throne. Drape the red velvet cape over his shoulders so the fur lining is at the top and hangs around his shoulders. Add a plastic costume crown.
