How to Play Dice Games Using Poker Dice

Dice games have always been a popular form of amusement. Many people feel that “Craps” is king in the casino, while many others enjoy playing popular board games that use dice. Others have become fond of a style of poker that uses dice instead of cards. The six sides of the dice feature a 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, rather than the traditional dots that we’re familiar with. This creates a fun game that anyone can learn in a matter of minutes. Here’s how to play.

Instructions

1. Gather together five dice to play the game. It is best if you can acquire the poker dice that were described in the introduction. If not, you can still play with regular dice. Simply substitute the 9 for 1, 10 for 2, Jack for 3, Queen for 4, King for 5 and Ace for 6.

2. Know what hands are good to have. Since the entire object of the game is to have a poker hand that is better than what other players roll, it is important to know the difference between good and bad dice combinations (see Resources below).

3. Allow the first player to take a turn. The player will roll all five dice, then evaluate the results to determine which dice to keep. Those dice will be set aside and a second roll taken. Again the player will decide which dice to keep and then take a third and final roll. The dice the player has acquired by the third roll represent their poker hand.

4. Pass the dice to the next player. Each player will repeat Step 3, taking up to three rolls each to build their poker hand. It should be noted that a player does not necessarily have to take all three rolls. If they build a poker hand that they are happy with, they can pass the dice to the next player rather than continuing to roll.

5. Evaluate each player’s poker dice hand. Determine the winner.

Tips & Warnings

• Many people like to make the game more challenging by allowing only two rolls per person instead of three, similar to playing video poker.
