Halloween is the one time of the year when no one will think you are creepy for hiding in the bushes and jumping out at passing strangers. You would have to be crazy not to take this opportunity to traumatize a few kids! There are an unlimited number of ways to scare people once you put your imagination to it. Here are two of my favorites.
Things You'll Need
- Black sweatpants
- Black face paint
- Black bandanna
- Black shirt
- Black sneakers
- Scary costume
- Fake tombstone
The Simple Sneak
Dress entirely in black clothes. Wear a long-sleeve shirt, sweatpants, black shoes and a black bandanna. You can cover your face in black face paint if you really want to go all out.
Hide on a fairly dark street where trick or treaters are likely to pass by. Standing against a large tree works well, and it is more comfortable than hiding in the bushes.
Wait until someone is passing by who you want to scare.
Step out in front of the person and say something low and sinister. Alternately, you can just growl. If you move calmly in the low light, they will hear you before they see you. All of the sudden, they will be face-to-face with an almost invisible creature muttering, “Say goodbye, human.”
The Two-Man Terror
Set up a fake gravestone in front of your house. Use as big a prop as possible, and put it in a shadowed area off to the side of the path.
Line the walkway to your house with candles. This will make it harder for trick or treaters to see anything in the shadows, and will draw their eyes away from the gravestone.
Dress up as something dead or undead. Zombie, mummy, ghoul, ghost and vampire are all good costumes.
Crouch down behind the gravestone.
Have someone answer the door as normal when trick-or-treaters come out. The greeter should hand out candy, make conversation, and do all the normal sorts of Halloween things.
Sneak up behind the trick-or-treaters silently when they are busy chatting at the door. When they turn around, moan, groan and generally behave like the living dead.
Tips & Warnings
- You can jump out at someone snarling with a monster mask if you want, but usually a little bit of subtlety makes things even scarier.
- Be careful who you jump out at. Even on Halloween, some people may not think it's funny.
