How to Prevent Flatulence

Everybody passes flatus, or “breaks wind.” In fact, it's not unusual for someone to pass up to 2,000 milliliters of flatus from his anus each day without it being noticeable. It's comprised of carbon dioxide, oxygen and methane. Unfortunately, this process often results in both a smell and a sound. It can be embarrassing and, in extreme cases, isolation.

      Watch what you eat. There are some foods that are naturally flatulogenic that should be avoided. Among them are broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbage, cauliflower and onions. Even though you may crave carbonated beverages, beer or milk, they should be avoided, also. If you find that you have a bad case, you would be smart to also exclude from your diet apples and all citrus fruits, cucumbers, lettuce, potatoes, dried fruit, spinach and soy products.

      At first, avoid all the foods listed above until your flatulence is relieved. Then, one by one, reintroduce each back into your diet. Soon you will begin to realize what causes you to pass gas at what levels.

      Take pills that contain activated charcoal, since they will absorb gas in your system. However, since these pills can interfere with other medication you may be taking, check with your doctor beforehand.

      Try over-the-counter products at your pharmacy. Many like Maalox or Mylanta contain simethicone, as do Beano tablets and liquid. These are generally fast-acting.

      Avoid using a straw when you drink a beverage, as it will cause you to ingest more air. If you routinely chew gum, realize that too will increase your flatulence for the same reason.

      Try to reduce stress because it can trigger a bout of flatulence. The next time you are stressed, notice the tightening of your abdominal muscles. That's your brain sending a signal to your intestines when it senses anxiety, depression or anger, causing both spasms and flatulence.

      When in doubt, work out. Often, flatulence is caused by a digestive system that is not working properly. When you feel discomfort, take a walk, because it can help you facilitate the passage of food through your digestive tract.
