Removing laptop cases are much more complicated than removing the cases on desktops. Most of the time, you will need to remove one piece at a time to reach the screws underneath other parts. It’s important to be patient and careful, so as not to damage any parts. With Compaq laptops, or any other laptop, removing the case itself may actually be more difficult than the actual upgrade or parts replacement you’re working toward.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Compaq manual for your model
  • Set of electronics screwdrivers and anti-static wrist strap
  1. Step 1

Print out the Removal and Replacement Procedures section of your manual on the Compaq website. If you only need to remove a certain part, you can print just that section.

  2. Step 2

Shut down and unplug your laptop.

  3. Step 3

Clip your anti-static wrist strap to some small part of the laptop or an area close by to ground yourself. If no wrist strap is available, stay away from carpet and touch someone or something to discharge electricity.

  4. Step 4

Remove the battery pack. Be sure the computer is upside with the front toward you. Slide and hold the release latch and lift the front edge of the battery pack and swing it towards you.

  5. Step 5

    Unscrew the four corner screws.

  6. Step 6

Remove the screws for each separate hardware compartment and the screws inside the compartments. See your manual for the correct order.

  7. Step 7

Lift the back case carefully. If you encounter any resistance, stop and check for any possible leftover screws. If no screws exist, you may need to take a flat head screwdriver and gently pry the edges of the case open.

Tips & Warnings
  • If screws have a thin plastic-looking film over them, use a small razor knife to remove the film and then remove the screw.
  • Keep screws with their respective parts. For instance, screws removed with the hard drive should be set aside with the hard drive.
  • Write down the steps you took to remove the case or take pictures along the way to ensure you replace everything correctly.
  • Be careful not to strip the screws. Otherwise, you may not be able to remove them or replace them.
