Running a web-hosting company is one of the quickest routes to the American dream. Here's how to start one of your own.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Personal computer
  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Register your business at the county clerk’s office and obtain a Doing Business As certificate. Log on to your state comptroller’s website or visit their office and incorporate your business. Open a business account at a bank.

  2. Step 2

Research domain names that relate to your business name. Choose a domain name that states what your company is about and what your philosophy is. When you find your domain name, register it to secure your web-hosting name online.

  3. Step 3

Research the various web-hosting options available, like reseller and dedicated server accounts. Decide the hosting platform you want: Windows or Linux.

  4. Step 4

Research various hosting packages. Visit web-hosting websites and compare packages. Select one that includes technical support and e-commerce. This allows you to concentrate on running your business, while your hosting company supplies the technical support and e-commerce solutions.

  5. Step 5

Choose a web-hosting provider. Consider the speed and redundancy built into their web servers, customer service solutions and technical support options. Call and e-mail the web-hosting companies to test their services and support. Request a list of websites they host and visit them to test loading speed.

  6. Step 6

Research web-hosting plans and decide which ones you want to offer your clients. Offer very low prices and you will appear inferior. Conversely, you will drive your clients away if your services are too expensive.

  7. Step 7

Build your web-hosting business website. Put some thought into it because this is where your clients register for your services.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are not familiar with the technical aspects of server management, consider starting as a reseller. This places the burden of providing back-end technical support on your web-hosting company instead of on you.
  • It is important that your web-hosting business accept credit cards. This is how most customers pay for goods and services on the internet. You may lose 50 percent or more of your business if you don’t accept credit cards.
  • Owning and running your web-hosting business can be rewarding, but it requires hard work.
