How to Sew Letters
Hand-sewing letters is great practice for hand-eye coordination. Kids will love making these cards with hand-sewn letters. Make different cards for various occasions such as Christmas, thank-you notes, birthdays or Mother's Day.

Cut a 3-by-5 inch card from the card stock paper.

Draw the shapes of the letters for your message with the pencil.

Using the needle poke a hole at the beginning of the first letter.

Make another hole about 1/4 inch down from the first hole.

Continue making holes 1/4 inch away from the last one until the first letter is outlined.

Thread your needle with the embroidery thread. Knot the thread.

Push your needle up from the back of the card through the second hole of the letter. Pull thread all the way through until the knot catches.

Push needle down through the first hole of the letter. Pull thread all the way through. This is the first stitch.

Bring the needle up through the back into the third hole. Pull thread all the way through.

Push needle down through the second hole. Pull thread all the way through to the back. This the second stitch.

Insert needle into the fourth hole and pull thread up from the back.

Push needle down through the third hole. Pull thread all the way through to the back. This is the third stitch.

Continue stitching in this way until the whole letter is outlined with stitches.

After the last stitch knot your thread and cut off the excess.

Repeat Steps 3 through 14 for all the letters on your card.

Glue the card to the front of a folded card.
