How to Make a Website Home Page User Friendly
The home page of your website should be clear and easy to read. The type face should be large enough for most views to read and the color scheme pleasing to the eye. Most web designers like to put in fancy flash technology. It is fun for them to design, however it is not fun for users. The first time you come to a site it may or may not be interesting to sit through designs flashing on the screen. Most users would rather get to the point of their visit to the site. It is especially tedious to sit through it on return visits. This long opening to a website intro always reminds me of people who have long intros to their voice mail message with dogs barking, kids reading rhymes or 3 minutes of their favorite music before you can leave a message. Keep it as simple as you can and still get your message across. I have 5 websites with 100 pages each. I get rave reviews from customers. Most of them have no trouble finding what they want. There are references to them at the bottom of this article.

Select a color scheme and then ask 3 people you know if they find it pleasing. Select a background that complements what you are showing, most use white but sometimes another color will make what you are presenting look better. Try some various combinations.

Large sites can have a navigation bar with a few rows at the top and more on the sides. Check out my sites and ebay for some ideas. Look at about 20 sites. Make notes on what you like and what you don't.

Pretend you are shopping for an common household item like a chair. Try to find it on various sites and make notes of the ones that made it easy and use what they know.

4
After you set up your site ask three people you know to try to find something on your site that you hope a viewer will be able to find. If your friend can't accomplish the goal neither will your customers. Frustration makes people shop elsewhere.

More customers are lost to those who have not followed through on these simple planning steps than people who don't like your prices or your products.

Tips & Warnings
After you have set up your navigation bars check all the links to make sure they go to the correct pages. It is easy to make an error here and your viewers will be lost.
After everything is set up retest it the next day to double check your work.
