How to Fix Catalytic Converters

Catalytic converters are built similar from model to model. Over time, the charcoal and filtering break down and cause the converters to overheat the engine. There is no means to repair the converter because it is a sealed part. Once it begins overheating the engine and smelling like rotten eggs as its components break down, it is time to change it.

Things You'll Need

  • Arc welder
  • Cutting torch
  • Welding goggles or hood

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the car on a lift and jack stands installed at all four corners. Any flammable materials near the vehicle should be removed from the area.

    • 2

Allow the vehicle to cool to room temperature before beginning the procedure. Once it has cooled, set up the cutting torch rig and set up tripods high enough to hold on both ends of the converter. Cut through both ends of the converter and remove the old part.

    • 3

Place your new converter on the tripods left after cutting the old converter out. Position the converter and tac-weld each end to hold it in place. After taking both ends, check the positioning of the converter. Make sure it lines up with the two exhaust line ends.

    • 4

Use the arc welder to weld a bead all the way around each converter end. Use your chipping hammer to remove slag and check for pin holes. If both welds are pinhole free, you have successively replaced your catalytic converter.

Tips & Warnings

  • The certified welder should wear all appropriate safety protection when attempting this repair. Keep people away from the welding area.

  • Do not look at the welding flash. It will burn your retinas and cause great pain.

  • Anyone attempting this procedure should be a trained and licensed welder. These procedures and not for novices.
