Things You'll Need:
- Antibiotic ointment
- Moisturizer
-
Step 1
Assess the hair you'd like removed. If you have lots of dark hair, laser hair removal may be a better option for you. Lasers work well on dark hair, and they are able to target many hairs at once. Though not permanent, laser hair removal does offer long-term hair reduction. During electrolysis, each hair is treated individually. If you have lots of hair, it will take several sessions to get rid of all of it. Since lasers aren't effective at removing blond or gray hair, electrolysis will be your best bet if you have lighter hair.
-
Step 2
Schedule a consultation with an electrolysis technician in your area. Most electrolysis technicians offer free consultations. During the consultation, the technician will explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have.
-
Step 3
Ask the technician about her safety practices. During electrolysis, she will insert a tiny needle into your hair follicle. The needle is connected to a machine that will then release a jolt of electricity into the follicle, effectively killing it. Your technician should use a fresh needle with each client, and all her instruments should be fully sterilized between sessions.
-
Step 4
Prepare your skin for your first session. Do not pluck or wax any hair in the area for 4 to 6 weeks before your first treatment. You can shave or trim the hair, but you should not pull it out by its roots. Keep your skin moisturized and avoid excessive sun exposure.
-
Step 5
Care for your skin properly following each session. Your skin will be vulnerable after an electrolysis session. It will likely appear red and irritated for a few hours. Apply antibiotic ointment to the area to speed healing. Stay out of the sun and avoid putting makeup on the area for 12 hours.
-
Step 6
Maintain a steady schedule with your electrolysis treatments. Your technician will be able to give you an idea of how many sessions you will need to remove all the hair from a particular area. Since hair needs to be treated when it is in its growth stage, it's important that you don't miss sessions.
