1
Choose a song that fits your voice. If you choose a song that is out of your range, you won't sound good singing it. If your song requires you to sing softly but your voice is raspy, pick something else.
-
2
Choose a song that is familiar to the crowd. If the crowd knows the song, it will be easier to get them motivated to cheer you on. Crowd participation is often part of the judging in a karaoke competition. If you don't know your audience, choose a standard song that almost anyone would know.

3
Know the song inside and out. Get to the point where you can perform the song without looking at the screen. Practice without using the words.
-
4
Work the crowd, walking through it as you perform. Make eye contact with the judges and individual audience members. If you can get the audience to clap along with your song, you'll get bonus points with the judges.
-
5
Dress to impress and to fit the song. Don't enter the contest in your jeans and t-shirt. Show the judges you mean business. Coordinate your outfit with your song. If your song is country, wear cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.

Know how to sing and sing well. Take a few voice lessons to sing from your diaphragm for extra power. Prepare your voice in advance for the contest. Don't drink alcohol or caffeine before the karaoke competition starts. Choose tea or something else warm to loosen up your voice.

Tips & Warnings
Choose songs that will showcase your voice. Use songs with power notes and sustained chords.
Keep a check on your nerves. If you get nervous easily, relax before the contest in a soothing hot bath, or get your mate to give you a back massage. Distract yourself during the day by doing something else you enjoy.
Don't eat a big meal right before you sing. It is harder to sing from your diaphragm if your stomach is full.
Bring along your own karaoke cd with your song choices. This way, you won't risk the DJ not having your song selection. The resource section lists two places where you can buy karaoke cds.
