Home Remedies to Remove Rust


There are many home remedies for removing rust. Many of the remedies use products that can be found in your home already. Rub away that rust in a few steps with these tried-and-true tricks.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 jar of white vinegar
  • 1 bottle of naval jelly
  • 1 sheet of aluminum foil 11" X 11"
  • 1 can of Coca Cola 12 oz.
  • 1 SOS scrubbing pad
  • 1 quart-sized glass jar

Removing Rust From Tools, Nuts, Bolts and Screws

  • Fill a quart-sized jar with white vinegar.

  • Immerse the tool into vinegar and allow it to soak over night.

  • Immerse rusted nuts, bolts or screws in a separate jar of vinegar to clean these as well.

  • Remove the tool, nuts, bolts or screws and wipe them clean of rust.

  • Prevent recurrence by coating cleaned tools, nuts, bolts or screws in light oil.

Remove Rust Spots From Chrome and Automobile Trim

  • Apply a thin coat of naval jelly to the rusted area and scrub it using a SOS pad. Allow it to stay on the surface for 10 minutes.

  • Rinse the naval jelly off using soap and water. Dry any chrome with a towel.

  • Cover chrome with coat of automobile polish and wax to prevent rust recurrence.

Alternate Method for Removing Rust From Chrome and Trim

  • Apply a coating of Coca Cola to the rusted area using a sponge.

  • Use a crumpled sheet of aluminum foil to scrub the cola-coated rust area.

  • Rinse it with soap and water after the rust is removed.

  • Coat the area with automobile polish and wax to prevent rust recurrence.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are cleaning many tools or fasteners, change the vinegar in the jar as it becomes cloudy or muddy in appearance.
  • Wear rubber gloves when using naval jelly.
