Step 1
Plan and keep the agenda for the road rally simple. There are usually a minimum of 10 cars per rally. The best road rallies are well-thought-out, have a per-car entry fee and often end at a restaurant or gathering in which “prizes” are given for the top three to five finishers. Also, most road rally participants are as a result of word-of-mouth advertising. Further, if the road rally is organized around a particular charity, be sure to get an express agreement about the percentage of the profits that will be donated to that charity. Additionally, a determination of how much of the remaining proceeds will go to each prize level (first prize, second prize, etc.) should also be expressed somewhere for the participants to view.

Step 2
Involve local businesses in organizing your rally. Most small business owners are more than willing to assist in a scavenger hunt if it costs them nothing, yet brings people into their location. Try a local pizza place where pizza slices are served. A clue in the rally could be “under the crust” in which a slice of pizza is purchased, or on the bottom of the box or plate. It is wise to set this up with the business owner in advance, but it is a fun thing for all.

Step 3
Map out each destination point and do a dry run of the rally to ensure success. If you can’t figure it out, how will the participants? Be sure that all clues, directions and descriptions are clearly stated. Further, clearly express the ending point of the rally as well as the fact that the first car to reach that particular spot is the winner.

Step 4
Make every participant feel that his investment in the road rally was worth it by providing food and beverages and gathering afterward to share and compare notes and stories about the rally. Participants like to share how they solved the clues to get to the final answer or destination.
