How to Make a Cat Fish Bait Recipe
Catfish are bottom feeders. The misconception is that catfish will hit on any bait that has a bad odor. While the odor may attract flies, it defeats the purpose if the odor does not attract the catfish. An economical, homemade catfish bait recipe can attract many catfish and makes for a very enjoyable fishing trip.
Things You'll Need
- Pantyhose
- Cheesecloth
- Chicken/animal livers
- 5-gallon bucket with lid
- Canned corn
- Beer
Instructions
-
Preparing the Bait
-
1
Cut the livers up into small pieces about half the size of golf balls and dip in flour.
-
2
Wrap the individual pieces of liver separately in the pantyhose or cheesecloth and tie the small packets securely.
-
-
3
Mix corn and beer into the 5-gallon bucket. The amount of corn or beer used depends on how much bait you want to make. The mixture should be soupy. (Use an ice cream bucket or other small container if you are only making a small batch of catfish bait.) This mixture helps to ferment the liver pieces so the smell attracts the catfish.
-
4
Add the liver packets to the mixture in the bucket. Mix the contents so the livers are completely coated with the mixture. You may need to add some water to the mixture so it coats everything.
-
5
Secure the lid tightly on the bucket. Set the bucket aside for about a week. It is best if you can put the bucket in a warm spot.
-
6
Check the bucket periodically throughout the week. The smell will be overpowering as the mixture ferments. There may also be pressure which builds up in the bucket so remove the lid carefully. It will not explode but may splatter particles of the contents on an unsuspecting person.
-
7
Use the catfish bait when the livers have "ripened" just as you would any other bait. The cheesecloth or pantyhose makes baiting the hook easy.
-
8
Freeze any unused bait in an airtight storage container. The catfish bait can be thawed in about half an hour for another fishing trip. Dispose of any unused bait after the second fishing trip. The livers can not be frozen again.

Tips & Warnings
Some fishermen prefer to set the bait on the hook before wrapping it into the pantyhose or cheesecloth.
The bait can be messy so it is advisable to wear gloves when pulling the bait out of the bucket and baiting the hook.
Do not dump any unused catfish bait into the fishing waters. It may be illegal in your area to do this.
