How to Apply Airbrushing Tanning Products

With all the research and statistics on sun damage, the only safe way to tan is a self-tanning product. Tanning products come in creams, lotions, towelettes and sprays. For an even all-over body tan, airbrushing tanning products are highly effective. In the past, airbrushed tanners were the realm of spas and salons, but you can now apply an airbrush tanner at home and get the same results as pricier salons. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your skin for airbrush tanning. Clean and exfoliate your skin an hour or more before you apply a tanner. This will help ensure the tanning product goes on evenly and lasts longer.

    • 2

Apply a lotion to areas that tan faster and darker. Elbows, knees, ankles, hands and feet all tend to turn darker with self-tanning products. Putting a layer of lotion on these areas creates a barrier that will prevent over-darkening. Regardless of the lotion, you will still get a tan on these areas; you just don’t want it too dark.

    • 3

Wear a dark-colored swimsuit, or you can undress completely. Self-tanners can stain, so don’t wear any new or expensive clothing.

    • 4

Place a protective mat or papers on the floor where you will be tanning. This will protect the floor from spots and stains.

    • 5

Follow the assembly directions for your airbrush tanning equipment. This involves a small air compressor, tubes and spray nozzle. There are disposable tanning products available in a can. If you’re using a can, make sure the product description allows for spraying the can upside-down.

    • 6

Hold the nozzle or can 6 to 8 inches from your skin and start spraying on your lower leg in a circular motion and work your way up. Repeat the procedure on the other leg.

    • 7

Work your way up your torso, making sure you get an even coat on your back. Standing in front of a large mirror will help you with even distribution. Use the spray on your arms and shoulders. Be careful to spray lightly around your elbows, as they absorb self-tanners quickly.

    • 8

Holding the spray nozzle about 10 inches from your face, hold your breath, close your eyes and lightly go over your face and neck area.

    • 9

Clean up any blotches or streaks by blotting with a clean cloth. If you cannot remove the streak with the cloth, dab a little lemon juice on a cotton ball and gently pat it on the area to lighten the tanning effect.

    • 10

Wait 20 to 30 minutes before dressing. This will allow the tanner to dry fully and help avoid staining your clothes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use lotion throughout the day to help your tan last longer.

  • Having someone help you with your back and hard-to-reach places can help the airbrush process go faster.

  • Always apply airbrushing tanning products in a well-ventilated area.
