Make a Cape for Halloween

Do you need a cape for Halloween for your wizard, witch, or Red Riding Hood costume? Here is how you can make a simple cape.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Material
  • Velcro
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  1. Step 1

First you will need material. You can buy 3/4 yard of fabric for children to one yard, for adults although more if you are making a longer cape for an adult. The fabric should be twice the length of what you want the cape to be. Or you can also buy a sheet or tablecloth at the thrift store. So, that you don't have to sew, the material should not fray. You could also use felt.

  2. Step 2

Fold the material (inside out) in half and then in half again. Lay it on a table so that it will be easier to work with. You will need to make a cut for your neck (upper left corner). Make an arc with a pen or sidewalk chalk. You can use a t-shirt neckline folded in half then half again to judge the size of the opening. Cut the material.

  3. Step 3

Then from the right upper corner to the left bottom corner you will be cutting the bottom. First take a ruler and measure from the left corner to the right corner. Then with that measurement mark it every so often as you move your ruler down the material. When you are done you should have a rounded edge (arc) marked on your material. Cut the material.

  4. Step 4

From the top right corner to the top left corner cut an opening through one of the folds of the material as this will be the opening of the cape.

  5. Step 5

Now you can unfold your cape and try it on and make sure the opening in the neck fits, then you can reinforce the collar by whip stitching a hem if you like.

  6. Step 6

Add on Velcro that has glue on it to keep the neck closed and anywhere else that you may want to keep it shut.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add glitter to your cape to make it really stand out.
