Most of us have had to deal with stale bread at one time or another. While many of us may have simply thrown out the stale bread and replaced it with fresh bread, others have their own unique methods of refreshing hardened and dried out loaves, rolls, and slices. There are several ways to do this, but here is one technique that is not only fast, but also yields a soft result. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Stale bread
  • Heavy duty paper towels
  • 1/4 cup of water, milk, or soy milk
  • A microwave-safe platter

Instructions

  1. Making Stale Bread Fresh Again

    • 1

      Moisten a paper towel with water, milk, or soy milk.

    • 2

      Wrap the bread in the paper towel.

    • 3

      Place bread on a microwave-safe platter.

    • 4

      Heat in the microwave on high for 15 seconds.

    • 5

      Remove from the microwave and unwrap the bread to see if it is moist enough. If not, repeat for another 15 seconds, or until you are pleased with the results.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer, you may brush the bread with water, milk, or soy milk and place it in a paper towel or enclose the moistened loaf in a small, sealed, brown paper bag before putting it in the microwave. Another option is to brush the surface of the bread with liquid and warm it in an oven that has been pre-heated to 300 degrees, for about 20 minutes. This will give you a crispier crust, similar to French or Italian bread.

  • Avoid getting the paper towel or the surface of the bread too wet; if this occurs, the liquid won’t evaporate properly, and your bread will be left soggy and dough-like.

  • Watch the bread closely so that you don’t overcook it. When left in a microwave or regular oven too long, the texture of the bread will become so hard that it will be inedible.
