Common knowledge says that a clean car engine is a better functioning car engine. Many methods get your engine clean, but steam cleaning can remove dirt and grime from otherwise unreachable areas. You must, however, take special precautions when steam cleaning an engine to avoid damaging sensitive parts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High-powered steam cleaner with wand attachment
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Prepare the steam cleaner. Add the appropriate amount of water and turn on the steam cleaner, giving it time to heat the water sufficiently.

  2. Step 2

Prepare your car. Open the hood and remove any leaves or other large pieces of debris that could interfere with your work. Take plastic bags and rubber bands or plastic wrap to cover wires, spark plugs, sensors, the distributor and all electrical work.

  3. Step 3

Begin steam cleaning. Once the water is heated, you can begin cleaning. Start from the top of the engine and work your way down, letting the dirty water and steam drip downward. Use the wand attachment to clean in all the small difficult areas.

  4. Step 4

Immediately remove the plastic protectors from the sensitive parts. Leave the hood open, and allow for several hours to let the engine dry completely.

  5. Step 5

Start the engine to make sure you haven't damaged any parts. Close the hood and drive as you normally would.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are careful about protecting the sensitive parts of your car. Getting these wet could cause a great deal of damage to the engine.
