How to Style a Formal Ponytail
If the stars are walking the red carpet with a ponytail, why can't you wear one to a formal event? Just as a ponytail can be dressed down by making it messy, it can be dressed up by making it sleek. It may not be as easy or quick of a style to create as the standard just-throw-it-up ponytail, but the extra time and effort make a huge difference. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Brush the front of your hair--from your forehead to your ears, about an inch deep--away from the bulk of your hair. Clip or tie this portion away from the rest of the hair while you work. It may look silly, but one way to do this is to tie it in a hair band like a horn.
-
2
Apply a shine serum or gloss to the rest of your hair. This will give the hair that sleek, glossy look once you pull it back. Be stingy with the amount of product, though. Too much can make your hair look greasy.

3
Gather your hair into a normal ponytail as usual, using your hands. Either lower this ponytail to the nape of your neck or bring it a bit higher than usual. A straight-back tail will not look as polished.
-
4
Use the natural bristle brush to smooth the hair back into your ponytail. Continue holding the tail and brush from the front of the hairline created to the base of the tail.
-
5
Gather your hair again if necessary. Repeat around the whole head, until all your hair is gathered and smooth.
-
6
Tie your ponytail with a hair tie that nearly matches your hair color.
-
7
Take a small bundle of hair from either side of the ponytail (a pinch will do) and wrap it around the hair tie. Secure underneath with a bobby pin.
-
8
Finish the look by parting the loose hair in the front as you would if you were wearing it down. Then smooth the hair behind your ears and secure it with a bobby pin or a decorative hair pin.
-
9
Spray with hairspray if desired.
