Start a Children's Church Program

So you’ve been elected as the person to start a children’s church program at your church. Now what? This is a big task. Even if your church isn’t that big it still can seem like such a large job for just one person and it is. That’s why you’ll need help. There are a bunch of things you need to consider when planning this great feat. Read through these steps to set up a successful program for the kids in your church.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with the pastor of your church to get permission to start a children’s church program. Ask if he can make an announcement to the church that teachers and teen volunteers are needed to begin such an exciting program that kids will love. Make it sound fun but underscore that the purpose is to grab hold of children’s attention to teach biblical principles.

    • 2

Pray about it. God knows you’ll need all the help you can get with making decisions. Decisions like; choosing a curriculum, asking for volunteers, scheduling and so much more. With God you can do all things, therefore seek him in your planning process. Pray daily that he will empower you to accomplish this great task.

    • 3

Form a children’s church committee of at least three or more people. This will help when you need to make hard decisions and when important advice is needed. Not to mention that creating this program is a large task and you will be able to delegate jobs to individuals so the whole load isn’t on your shoulders alone.

Look over a few different curriculums and with the committee decide as soon as possible about which one you will want to use to teach the kids. As soon as you make your decision, order it immediately to get the ball rolling.

    • 5

Take the curriculum when it comes in and look it over. Make copies if allowed. Set up a folder for each lesson with everything included. If crafts are involved, include materials for the craft so the teacher has what they need. You may choose to leave that part of it to the teacher themselves.

    • 6

Make a schedule of teachers and helpers and check with them individually for confirmation that they can teach that particular Sunday. If there is a conflict with the schedule, switch that person with someone else on the schedule. Advise the teachers that they are responsible for finding their own replacement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Provide a resource room stocked with basic craft supplies.

  • Set up individual rooms with enough chairs and tables for the amount of children that you estimate will come. Also keep the room clean and well stocked of necessary items.
