Here's how to keep rhythm without a metronome.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the basic principles of a metronome.

A metronome is a device that plays a certain number of rhythm units, known as beats, during the course of a minute. The metronome can be sped up or slowed down, but remains constant during the course of a song. The amount of beats per minute measured by a metronome is abbreviated as BPM.

  2. Step 2

To keep rhythm without a metronome, learn how to steadily tap along with a song or musical beat. Tap your finger down at the exact moment you feel the beat will play, so every tap sounds at the exact time as the beat. If you are late, your beat will sound like an echo. If you tap early, your beat will make the other beat sound like an echo.

  3. Step 3

Once you've practiced tapping along to music, tap without listening to music. Focus intently on making the intervals between beats exactly the same. It's just like knocking evenly on a door. Make every tap fall the same distance between every other tap. The sound is uniform and consistent.

  4. Step 4

Now tap along while singing or rapping. You'll notice the complexity of singing distracts you from keeping the exact time. So practice singing or rapping without changing the beat. Then you'll be able to keep time without a metronome.
