Any adventure in geocaching require a number of preliminary checks. The most important of these if whether dogs are permitted. Check prior to departure for access conditions, especially in beach side areas, national and state parks. Some geocachers are specifically aimed at canine lovers and include details of off leash areas.

Make sure your dog is socially behaved. Ultra aggressive or passively scared are two unfavorable attributes. Ideally, train your dog before their first adventure with simple commands such as "stop", "walk", "no" and "come". Dogs in heat should never be taken out.
