This article will teach you how to make a Glycerine Extract of an Herbal Tincture.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A previously made herbal tincture
  • A double boiler
  • Glycerine (the same amount as you have of tincture)
  • Bottles to store the Extract
  1. Step 1

Take a previously made herbal tincture (see my article on making an herbal tincture to help cure the common cold.)

  2. Step 2

Pour the tincture into the top of a double boiler. Add an equal amount of glycerine (4 cups of tincture to 4 cups of glycerine, for example.)

  3. Step 3

Over very low heat, cook the mixture until it has reduced in volume by half, or 50%. The alcohol will "cook off" while you are doing this.

  4. Step 4

Once the mixture has cooled, store in glass bottles, preferably refrigerated.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a very low heat to reduce the mixture, you don't want it to scorch.
  • The glycerine will make the extract naturally sweet, so children will find it easier to take.
  • Follow dosing recommendations for the original tinctures.
  • Make sure you follow the various warnings of the original herbal tincture, just because this is an extract, they still apply.

on 12/6/2008 I use this with the elderberry tincture, as it makes it very useful for children.

(Sorry for the delay in my reply, insanely busy with work this past month!)

on 11/11/2008 Interesting. What herbs work best with this, and do you have some recommended remedies that you like to use this for. I am always interested in home remedies and avoiding OTC medicine.
