It's easy to dye your hair blonde at home. And you only need to spend about $5-$10.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • For brown to light brown hair, use the lightest shade of Revlon ($5) blonde color available.
  • For dark hair, buy a Clairol bleach blonde kit ($10).
  • You can buy either of these at any supermarket or Target type store. Pay more for higher quality dyes, if you want.
  1. Step 1

Open the box. Pay close attention to the instructions. Whatever you do, you don't want to get bleaching dye in your eyes, so you might want a friend to help you. You'll have to be careful about what you touch while you're bleaching your hair as well. Hair bleach can stain towels, clothes, and many surfaces.

  2. Step 2

To get the most out of the bleaching agents, wash your hair in the morning before you dye it, and don't use conditioner.

  3. Step 3

Mix the two ingredients together and put on the enclosed plastic gloves. Rub half the bottle of the cream through your hair, but don't really get on your scalp. Let it sit.

  4. Step 4

Here's the tricky part, where opinions differ a lot. The main problem with do-it-yourself hair bleach is it tends to leave your hair brassy orange instead of blonde. This orange color is very unnatural looking, and is easily recognizable as a bad dye job.

  5. Step 5

To get rid of the brassy color, you can let the hair dye sit in your hair longer, but you run the risk of burning your scalp. This can also damage your hair and your follicles.

  6. Step 6

Let the blond sit in your hair for the recommended time, and rinse it out. Be careful to rinse it with your eyes closed so the bleach doesn't drip into them. Add the conditioner. Check what the color is. Most likely it will be lighter, but still orang-y blonde. If it's blonde enough, job well done.

  7. Step 7

If it's too orange, let your hair rest over night. The next day, take the second half of the bottle and perform a second dye job. This time, it should lighten to an adequate blonde color.

(The dye bottle foams bleach out the top it sits over night, so keep it in a ziploc bag.)

Add a lot of extra conditioner to your hair after you wash the second dye job out of it.
