Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement springs
  • Safety goggles
  • Floor jack and stands
  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Box wrench
  • Adjustable crescent wrench
  • Lug wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Spring compressor and associated tools
  1. Step 1

Raise the Explorer and block the wheels with jack stands before taking off the shock and spring assembly.

  2. Step 2

Compress the spring with the spring compressor until the tension is released. The spring holds a great deal of pressure and can be potentially dangerous. Exercise caution when releasing the pressure.

  3. Step 3

Separate the shock absorber assembly from the spring by removing the shock mounts and washers.

  4. Step 4

Replace the old spring with the new spring. The new spring should be attached over the shock absorber before slipping the upper shock mount into position.

  5. Step 5

Reassemble the shock assembly and reattach the compressor to the spring.

  6. Step 6

Connect all removed components to the Explorer and lower the vehicle before making final adjustments to the springs and suspension.

Tips & Warnings
  • Removing the front and rear springs require basically the same procedure.
  • The coil springs hold a great deal of potential energy and removing them can be a dangerous operation. Be very cautious when removing the springs as they can cause great bodily harm if freed in an uncontrolled manner.
