How to Replace the Rotor in a Subaru Outback

If your Subaru Outback seems to be pulsing and shuddering to a stop these days, then it's time for new rotors. Brake rotors only need to be replaced if they get warped or worn down and can't be resurfaced, and the process for swapping them out is simple enough to do in your own garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy new rotors for your Subaru Outback at your local auto parts store or order them online. It's best to replace all of the rotors at once, but at the very least you need to replace the front or rear pair of rotors at the same time to maintain safe and even braking performance.

    • 2

Raise your Outback with jacks and jack stands to support your vehicle. Block the wheels to keep your Subaru from rolling while you work. Remove the tire and wheel assembly with a socket wrench or air ratchet.

    • 3

Unfasten the two caliper mounting bolts. Slide the caliper and connected brake line off the old rotor and then suspend the caliper assembly from the Subaru's undercarriage using heavy mechanic's wire. Be very careful not to let the brake line get disconnected from the caliper.

    • 4

Remove the old rotor and set it aside. Clean the area around the hub with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and corrosion.

    • 5

Install the new rotor onto the studs and fasten the brake rotor holding screws. Discard the wire and move the caliper and brake line back into position. Tighten and torque down the caliper mounting bolts with a torque wrench or an air ratchet with an appropriate adapter.

    • 6

Put the wheel assembly and tire back onto the hub. Move on and repeat this process for each additional rotor. When you're done, lower the Subaru, tighten and torque the lug nuts and pump the brake pedal until the brake feels firm. Test drive your Subaru Outback to make sure the rotor installation was successful.
