How to Troubleshoot the Steering System in a Nissan Altima
Nissan introduced the mid-sized Altima in 1993. Originally a 4-door sedan, a coupe was added to the model line in 2007. The best way to keep your Altima in top running condition is to make sure you stay on top of problems when they occur. One of the most important systems to troubleshoot is your car's steering.

1
Remember the basic trouble spots for steering: tires, power steering fluid, alignment and linkage. Start with tires and fluid then check alignment and finally linkage. If these don't resolve the problem, you still have options.
-
2
Rotate and balance your tires every 6,000 to 7,500 miles. Keep the tire pressure even and replace worn tires in pairs. If you experience vibrations and shimmying check your tire pressure and condition first and then your wheel alignment. You should also check tires and alignment if you experience difficulty steering or if you car veers or drifts.

3
Check the power steering fluid if your have difficulty steering or the power steering cuts out. Top levels off with Nissan PSF or equivalent. Replace the fluid if it's contaminated or you find air.
-
4
Service the steering gear, linkage, axle and suspension every 30,000 miles. Make sure the connections are lubricated and the parts aren't worn. Linkage and suspension problems can cause too much play in the steering wheel.
-
5
Look at the power steering pump if you continue to have difficulty steering. The drive belt might be loose or the pump may not be providing enough pressure to the system. If the pump checks out, the problem may be with the gearbox or rack.
-
6
Inspect the suspension and front end if the steering system isn't the cause of your problems. You could have worn shocks or springs, or problems with the wheel bearings and ball joints.
