How to Drop the Oil Pan in a Chevy Camaro

The Chevy Camaro model years from 1993 through the 2002 are similar in terms of the engine structure and design. One repair often needed is replacement of the oil pan. The oil pan collects and houses the oil when it's not in use by the engine. A crack or broken piece of the pan can cause oil leakage and ultimately damage to the engine if the engine is run without enough oil.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ramps or jack and jack stands
  • Oil drip pan
  • Wrench or socket set
  • Engine support fixture
  1. Step 1

Run the Camaro for at least 5 minutes to circulate the oil through the engine. Park the vehicle in a stable and flat surface area.

  2. Step 2

Drive the vehicle up onto ramps or use a jack and jack stands to raise the vehicle off the ground. Always follow manufacturer's directions when using this equipment to insure your safety.

  3. Step 3

Drain the oil from the Camaro by sliding an oil drip pan under the oil pan, located under the car between the tires. To drain the oil, use a wrench to unscrew the oil drain plug on the oil pan. This allows oil to stream out and into the drip pan.

  4. Step 4

Use an engine support fixture to support the engine. Once the oil has drained out of the vehicle fully, follow the manufacturer's directions to install the engine support fixture properly. This is necessary since you'll be removing many critical engine support features.

  5. Step 5

Remove the negative battery cable, the right and left engine mount to cradle bolts and the right and left lower shock bolts using a wrench or socket set. Also remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt. Each is located on or near the oil pan.

  6. Step 6

Ensure the engine cradle is supported with the engine support fixture. Double-check the strength and location of the fixture at this time to ensure strength.

  7. Step 7

Disconnect the oil level switch that is located right on the oil pan. Then, remove the oil level sensor from the oil pan and the starter motor using a wrench or socket set.

  8. Step 8

Unscrew the front cross member bolts. There will be four bolts to unscrew using a wrench located around the edge of the oil pan to remove, which will then allow the oil pan to drop off.

Tips & Warnings
  • For the Chevy Camaro 5.7L engine, follow all directions provided, but only remove the negative battery cable, starter motor, oil filter, left and right engine mount to cradle bolts, the left and right lower shock bolts and the intermediate steering shaft bolts. This engine model has six bolts holding the oil pan into place.
  • With the Chevy Camaro's design, the engine mount is loosened, requiring the engine to be supported throughout this process. For this reason, only attempt to drop the oil pan if you have the proper equipment and experience to protect the engine.
