Things You'll Need:
- Power steering fluid
-
Step 1
Check the power steering fluid level in your Toyota Highlander every 15,000 miles. You can check the power steering fluid at the same time that you check other fluids, like coolant, brake fluid and transmission fluid.
-
Step 2
Make sure that the vehicle is parked on a level surface and that the engine is cool before you check the power-steering fluid, since hot fluid will read at a different level than cold fluid.
-
Step 3
Locate the power steering fluid reservoir, which should be on the passenger side of the engine department in all Toyota Highlander vehicles. Remove the cap and use the dipstick to read the fluid level.
-
Step 4
Add power steering fluid if the level reading is below the low level mark. Add fluid very gradually to avoid over filling above the maximum level mark, and drain excess fluid by detaching the hose at the bottom of the reservoir.
-
Step 5
Inspect the reservoir, hose, clamps and power steering pump for any worn or broken areas that may be causing a leak and need replacing. Replace necessary parts immediately since hot fluid leaking into the engine can cause expensive engine damage.
