Spilled gasoline can be tough to get out of carpets because it's an oily solvent. Sack the stink with a few household ingredients.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Dry the spill as much as possible using paper towels.

  2. Step 2

Mix a solution of one part regular white vinegar to seven parts hot water and douse the spill with it. Either use paper towels to sop the water back up or utilize a wet vac.

  3. Step 3

When you have cleaned up as much of the vinegar solution as you can, rinse the spot with a second solution of 1 part baking soda to 10 parts hot water. Again, vacuum the water or blot with paper towels.

  4. Step 4

Pat the area dry. Once the spill has been allowed to dry completely, the gasoline and vinegar odors will have dissipated.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the gasoline spill happened in a vehicle, the smell will still linger for a while because it has been absorbed by the upholstery. Try sprinkling cat litter or baking soda into a tray and leaving it on the floor of the vehicle for a few days.
