Play You've Been Ghosted for Halloween

If you are looking for a fun way to get in the Halloween spirit, start the You've Been Ghosted game in your neighborhood. In the game, one person secretly tapes a picture of a ghost on the doors of two neighbors. The person also leaves a bag of candy and a note with instructions. The note says to leave candy and a ghost for two people within two days. The picture of a ghost shows everyone whose house has already been ghosted. If everyone plays along, the neighborhood is full of ghosts within a short time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick two neighbors to ghost. The ideal time to start the game is two to three weeks before Halloween. This allows time for the game to spread to many different houses and possibly to other neighborhoods. Be sure to pick neighbors who will keep the game going and enjoy the fun.

    • 2

Print out two copies each of the You've Been Ghosted letter and the ghost picture (see Resources). It is a good idea to put the ghost picture on bright or fluorescent paper so other neighbors can easily see who has already been ghosted. If you have any Halloween-themed paper, print the letter on that for a festive touch. Do not sign the letter or write anything that reveals your identity.

    • 3

Put the Halloween candy in the paper bags and attach the You've Been Ghosted letter to each bag. Place a piece of tape on the ghost picture.

    • 4

Ghost your two neighbors when it is dark. Put the bag with the candy and note on the front door and quickly tape the ghost picture on the front door. Ring the doorbell and run. If you can, hide nearby so that you can see the neighbor’s reaction when she finds the treat.

    • 5

Watch as your neighbors ghost other neighbors. Within a few days, you will see many houses that have been ghosted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not live in a neighborhood, you can start the You've Been Ghosted game in a friend or family member's neighborhood.

  • When you go ghosting, be sure to wear dark clothing. Walk to your neighbor's house or park your car out of sight.

  • Get children involved in the game. They are usually very eager to help pick out the treats and ghost their friends' houses.

  • Don't tell your neighbors that you started the game. It adds to the fun and mystery to not know who began the fun.

  • Be safe when you go ghosting. Make sure that you tell someone where you are going. If the neighbor becomes scared or concerned, be sure to reveal your identity.
