Interview Grandparents

Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. Whether you see them once a week, once a year or somewhere in between, you know your grandparents have lots of stories to tell, and you know they will not be around to tell them forever. Take the time to record some of the rich family history they have to tell and you can someday pass these stories down to your own grandkids.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a time and date when you can spend some uninterrupted, focused, leisurely time with your grandparent. Choose the best time of day for both of you. For example, if Grandma or Grandpa tires easily in the afternoon, set a morning date.

    • 2

Start by asking your grandparent to tell you one of her favorite childhood stories. If she can't think of one right away, ask what a birthday or special holiday would have been like when she was a child.

    • 3

Ask your grandparent what he was like at your age, and what a typical day would have been like for him at your age. Ask also what he was like at your parents' age, and what life was like when your grandparent was raising your mom or dad.

    • 4

Find out when and where your grandparent went to school. Ask if most of the students in her class went all the way through school and graduated, or if it was typical to leave school and help support the family.

    • 5

Ask questions about your grandparent's mother and father, and even his grandparents. You might learn some fascinating details about your family tree. You might even learn something about yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you interview a grandparent via email, print out the emailed conversations on acid-free paper and create a scrapbook.
