Black isn't the only slimming color.

Regardless of the size of your waist, hips, bust and thighs, you can look slimmer by wearing clothes that flatter the figure you have. When you wear fitted clothes, you look slimmer and leaner. It also helps to wear heels and keep dresses and skirts at the knee to show more leg, which elongates the body. Sometimes belts can be used to cinch the waist, which creates more of an hourglass figure.

From Quick Guide: Big & Tall Clothing Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase jeans that have a darker wash and that have a straight leg. The darker wash and straight lines give a slimming illusion to your legs. When you are trying on jeans, they should fit the widest part of you and go straight down from there. If you have a belly, you might want to get jeans that have a tab front, which will hold your belly in. Trouser jeans look more sophisticated and can be worn to work if you have a casual day.

  2. Step 2

Shirts should always be fitted to your body. Make sure it fits you in the shoulder and the length of the shirt shouldn't go past your crotch. If the shirt is longer, it's only going to make you look shorter. Shirts with darts can be flattering. Sweaters should be thin and not chunky. Silk and chiffon tops should float away from the body, which can help camouflage a tummy. Also, dress shirts should be able to be buttoned; if there are gaps between the buttons, go up a size.

  3. Step 3

Wear dresses that have an empire waist. This emphasizes the smallest part of your body under your bust. Sometimes there is a panel of fabric here or a belt can be worn to cinch the waist. The length of the dress should not go past your knee. If you prefer skirts, try A-line skirts that cinch your waist and float away from the body.

  4. Step 4

Layering structured jackets on top of shirts and camisoles can accentuate your waist and bust. Wearing a jacket can also hide a tummy. Jackets should fit in the shoulder and not have shoulder pads, which only add weight to your frame. Shorter jackets that hit your waist or mid-hip are best, because it makes your torso shorter and your legs appear longer.

  5. Step 5

Try darker bottoms and colorful tops. Colors can be slimming, especially if you wear gem tones like burgundy, emerald, chocolate brown, etc.

Tips & Warnings
  • Accessorizing with pointy toe shoes can elongate your body.
  • Ignore the sizes of the clothing and just make sure that they fit you properly.
  • If pants are too long, get them tailored.
  • It can take a lot of time and a lot of trying on clothes before finding the right clothes that fit.
