Instructions

    • 1

Decide which side of the squash or gourd will face up based on appearance and stability. If there is a particular side that is less prone to tilting or movement, that should be the bottom.

    • 2

Set the tea light candle (unlit) on the squash or gourd where you would like the candle to go. While holding the candle, use the marker to trace a circle where the candle will eventually sit.

    • 3

Set the squash or gourd on the cutting board. Carefully cut around the circular marking on the squash. Then cut an "x" within the circle from edge to edge. With this done you will be able to use the knife to remove the yellow outer skin within the circle. It is alright if you cut somewhat deeply into the squash as it will be dug out anyway.

    • 4

With the flesh being partially removed, you will now use the spoon to dig a substantial portion of the interior out. You should dig to the approximate depth of your candle.

    • 5

Place the candle into the hollowed-out squash or gourd. The candle should fit somewhat snugly. If you have to force the candle or it is not the correct depth, gently use the knife to enlarge the opening or use the spoon to deepen the hole. You should also check to make sure the luminary will sit level and be stable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a large gourd instead of a small squash, you should definitely select the appropriate size candle.

  • Refrigerating the squash or gourd will make the carving easier.

  • Use only a fresh squash or gourd as dried out ones may easily loose shape or catch fire.

  • Place the luminary on a fireproof tray to help protect against a fire hazard or dripping hot wax.

  • Do not leave a lit luminary unattended or in the reach of children.
