Some dogs are just downright picky eaters and it’s hard to get them to accept certain foods that are good for them. This can be frustrating but it doesn’t have to be that way. To get your dog to eat the foods you buy, follow these simple rules to get started.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog food
  • Optional treats and flavors

Check to make sure you’re dog isn’t feeling poorly. Sometimes it’s not that your dog doesn’t want to eat what you offer, it’s that they are just not feeling well. Check for loose stools or vomiting and make sure they’re not listless and can walk easily.

Try a mixture of dry and canned if your dog is used to only one type of food. Switching diets isn’t always the best thing for their digestive system but if you add just a little at a time it can provide the right mixture to get them interested again.

Add some seasoning. Dogs love the way things taste just like humans. If you’ve been feeding them a certain brand or type of food, add a little chicken broth to the mixture to add flavor. Pet stores and major retailers also sell dog gravy and sprinkles to add to their food. This gives the food a new taste and might perk up their curiosity.

Try home cooked foods. Rice and chicken is a good food to help prevent diarrhea and vomiting. This mixture usually won’t upset their stomach. Add some precooked rice and chicken to their existing food. Not only will it help with digestion, they’ll get the new flavor and will be inclined to try it out.

Try hand feeding your dog. This isn’t an ideal situation to use all of the time but using the food as a “treat” can help your dog become interested in what you have. Have the food in a bowl ready to eat but use the first pieces like a treat by holding it up and making them sit or wait on it. After you see that they want more, then give them the bowl with the food already prepared. You can even hold the bowl up like a treat as well. If you have dry food pellets you can place them into a treat holder and let your dog play with it. Finding a special treat will make the food more enticing.

Stick with a food they like. If your dog has always liked a certain brand of food and it’s still available to buy, stick with that food.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have patience and understanding with your dog.

  • Never give a dog chicken bones, it can splinter and choke them or damage their stomach.
