Thumb through each book to make sure you don't leave any personal papers, bookmarks or other items in the pages. If the book came with a workbook,CD or DVD put it with the book. Textbooks without the resources they came with are more difficult to sell. Highlighting, underlining, and margin notes are acceptable.

You are very unlikely to get anywhere near what you paid for your book. But recycling a book you no longer need helps our environment, puts dollars in your pocket and helps other students who will be able to buy a used copy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even if the bookstore will not buy the book back because it is an older edition, try selling it on Amazon or Half.com. There are no fees unless it sells and sometimes people are looking for books on that topic and will take an older edition.

  • If you are selling an older edition on Amazon, take a look at the average sales rank. This is listed under product details. If the book doesn't seem to sell often, consider dropping it to the lowest price point so it will likely be the first to sell if someone buys a copy.

  • Do not misrepresent your book. Make sure you list the edition correctly and if it has the workbook, CD etc that it came with if applicable.

  • If you are shipping the book yourself and it was pricey, consider purchasing delivery confirmation. Then you can be sure it arrived safely.
