Your Macintosh laptop, desktop, or iMac froze. How do you safely turn it off and restart it?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the power button on your frozen Macintosh computer.
Hold it down for about 10 seconds.

  2. Step 2

The macintosh should either restart or shut off. If it shuts off, press the button once to restart the computer.

  3. Step 3

If the computer restarts but does not get to the log in screen, hold down the power button for another 10 seconds or until the computer restarts again.

If it doesn't reboot on the first restart, it often reboots on the second or third.

  4. Step 4

If your computer hasn't rebooted by the third restart, have a friend who knows about Macintosh computers help you, or take the computer to the nearest Apple store.
