How to Use the Phone & Internet with NetZero

If you are interested in getting Internet service at a cheaper price, NetZero might be for you. NetZero is a dial-up system that can be used with any phone line or service you already have. Unlike with other Internet providers--like cable or phone companies--you do not have to sign up for any service other than Internet. Recently, NetZero has begun to offer other forms of Internet access, such as DSL.

Instructions

1. Make sure you have a phone connection you can use for your dial-up connection. If you don't already have one, contract with one of the phone providers in your area. (In some areas, NetZero can also provide your phone service.)

2. Call [phone], or visit the NetZero website if you have access to the Internet. (Follow the link in Resources.) You can sign up either over the phone or online. Provide your local phone number and your billing information. If you would like NetZero to provide your phone service, you will need to order by phone. If you already have phone service, you can sign up via the phone or online.

3. Wait to receive the NetZero program and then install it. You will be able to download the program if you already have internet service; if not, Net Zero will send you a CD-ROM. Download the program and follow the directions to install.

4. When the program is finished installing, open it and log in with information that will have been given to you when you signed up for Net Zero. Your phone should work as always, except when you are online.

5. When you want to use the Internet, click on the desktop icon in order to dial up. The program will dial through your phone line and connect you. Once you are connected, you can open a web browser. When you are finished, click the "Disconnect" button in your login/logout information to get offline and open your phone line again. If you have chosen the newer DSL version of NetZero, you will not have to worry about dialing up, as your computer will always be connected to the Internet. You simply click on a web browser to open it and surf away.

6. You cannot use your phone while you are online if you have the basic NetZero dial-up package. If you have a second phone line, you can use it instead. If you have DSL, your phone will never be busy while you are online.

Tips & Warnings

• Getting call waiting will allow you to see if you have incoming calls. Ask your NetZero provider about this service. You will be notified via an on-screen display when there is an incoming call, and can choose whether or not to take it.

• Having a second line that is only for the Internet will give you a better connection that will not be interrupted.
