How to Make Custom Dice

Customizing your dice is easy, but doing it in a way that is artful and durable takes more work. The best method is to use acrylic paint and a clear coating. The acrylic paint will allow you to have fine control over the design of your dice, and the coating will help to ensure that the paint does not rub off as you roll the dice. This will not significantly change the shape or weight of the die, so it should give you a fair roll after you've finished painting it.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy some blank dice. Go to your local game supplier, or buy blank dice from an online company (see Resources).

    • 2

Sketch out your designs. Using graph paper, draw out each side about the size you want it on the die. Redo it until you have it right.

    • 3

Paint the first color of the first side. Use a acrylic paints and a fine paintbrush to apply as thin a layer as possible.

    • 4

Apply the second color, if you are using more than one. Wait a couple minutes for the acrylic to dry to the touch, then add a second layer of paint.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for all the other sides, leaving several minutes in between. Be sure to handle the custom die delicately so as not to smudge the paint.

    • 6

Let the die dry overnight, then coat it with a clear acrylic coating such as the one linked to below. Spray 5 sides of it and wait about 15 minutes. Then, turn it over and spray the remaining side. Alternately, you can hold the die between two corners in your hand and spray the whole thing at once, then hold it while it dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • The bigger the dice you use, the easier they will be to customize.

  • You can also use fine tipped sharpies to customize dice. This is an easier way to do it, though the dice will be prone to smudging.

  • Do not use too many colors at first. Your design will look clearer with one or two colors.

  • Use the acrylic coating in a well-ventilated room.
