How to Make a Spider out of Paper

Make paper spiders to decorate a pretend web for Halloween or for imaginary play. Spiders can be made in different sizes and hung on a homemade yarn web or on a bulletin board at a school. The eight-legged creatures may also be used to decorate a desk. Hang the pretend arachnids outside to create a non-too-spooky Halloween scene.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cup upside down on a black sheet of construction paper. Trace the circle of the cup with the chalk. Cut out the circle with scissors. Use the circle as a template to cut out a second circle.

    • 2

Cut out a long and thin strip of construction paper. The strip could be about six or seven inches long. Make seven more strips the exact same length as the first one.

    • 3

Fold the bottom end of the construction paper up so it forms a small square. Flip the strip over so the folded square is now under the paper and away from you. Fold that square down towards you. Continue flipping and folding the paper until you have a strip of paper that resembles a small accordion. Do the same for the other seven strips of paper.

    • 4

Unfold the folded strips. Glue one white pom pon to one end of the paper strip. Set the paper down, pom pon facing up. Glue the other seven pom pons to the other seven strips of paper to make the legs of the paper spider.

    • 5

Glue the flat end of each leg to the top of one of the circles. Space out the paper strips to look like legs. Glue the second circle on top of the circle with the legs, to secure the legs even further.

    • 6

Draw two eyes and mouth on the top circle of the spider. Poke a hole in the center of the paper spider. Thread the yarn through the circles from the top. Tie a large knot in the bottom. Hang the spider up and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use different sizes of cups to make a family of spiders.

  • Keep all the pom pon feet facing the same direction.

  • Do not use pom pons if the paper spiders will be around babies.
